Traditions

Every weekend, we have family dinners on Sundays, a tradition we’ve kept since our children were young. Everyone brings something, or we take turns cooking.  We have some fantastic cooks; two of my boys love to grill and cook, while one loves eating it all—Tanner! Jade enjoys both cooking and eating, joking that he is my sous chef. (My daughters live in other states, so they don’t get to be here, but they hear about the menu and the laughs.) We laugh, play games, and give each other a hard time. Yesterday, we played trivia, mostly about movies and actors. Jade loves movies and knows who played what character in which film. Somehow, the way God wired him makes these types of things click for him and are important to him, which truly played to his strengths this Sunday. Watching him interact with everyone was so sweet! He knew more answers than Frank and I did combined. The joy it brought him to engage with his family was amazing, especially when he answered questions no one else knew, like who was the actor who played Smeagol in The Hobbit—it put him over the moon! He doesn’t always engage, but when he does, it’s a blast. Traditions like this are the building blocks of who we become.
